Environmental safety and climate change are pressing issues that demand immediate action. Rapid urbanization and industrial growth have led to significant environmental degradation, posing severe risks to both human health and natural ecosystems. Among the many challenges, improper waste management and the pervasive use of single-use plastics stand out as critical areas that require urgent attention.

Waste Management

Effective waste management is crucial for maintaining environmental safety. In Delhi NCR, approximately 10,000 tons of waste are generated daily, with only a small fraction being properly segregated and recycled. The majority of waste ends up in landfills, contributing to land pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the degradation of local ecosystems. Poor waste management practices lead to the contamination of soil and water resources, adversely affecting both human health and biodiversity.

Reduction of Single-Use Plastics

Single-use plastics are a significant contributor to environmental pollution. Globally, about 300 million tons of plastic waste are produced each year, with half of this being single-use items. In India, single-use plastics account for a substantial portion of the 26,000 tons of plastic waste generated daily. These plastics often end up in oceans and rivers, where they harm marine life and enter the food chain, posing serious health risks to humans and animals alike.

Anchal’s Green Revolution

To address these challenges, Anchal Charitable Trust has created a project model, focusing on waste management and the reduction of single-use plastics. This aims to foster environmental sustainability and promote climate resilience within residential societies. We educate and empower residents through workshops, seminars, and the distribution of educational materials on waste segregation and recycling. Promote proper waste disposal by installing color-coded bins for biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable waste in strategic locations.

Reducing single-use plastics by conducting regular plastic collection drives and promoting eco-friendly alternatives. Implementing community composting units to manage organic waste and convert it into valuable compost for community gardens, while organizing interactive sessions and community challenges to encourage active participation and share best practices.

By involving residents in awareness campaigns and practical activities, the model aims to build a sustainable and environmentally conscious community. With Delhi NCR generating approximately 10,000 tons of waste daily and India producing around 26,000 tons of plastic waste each day, of which a significant portion is single-use plastics, these efforts are both timely and necessary. Globally, around 300 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually, with 50% being single-use items.

Effective waste management through this project can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease land and water pollution, and protect biodiversity, making a substantial positive impact on the environment.
